WHAT TURF NEEDS
Turf needs….
Have a look at my handy guide of what your lawn needs and when.
WHAT TURF NEEDS | ||||
Nutrient | Use on the turf | Effect | Typical source | Best time to apply |
NITROGEN Greens grass Stimulates leaf growth |
ESSENTIAL Nitrogen is leached out of the soil after an average winter so this will need to be replaced. |
Rich green and vigorous growth. All spring and summer feeds should have more nitrogen than any other element. Autumn feeds should have low nitrogen content as growth does not want to be stimulated. Nitrogen can be applied as a quick or slow acting element. |
Lawn sand. Sulphate of ammonia. Dried blood. Urea nitrogen. |
SPRING and SUMMER |
PHOSPHATES Helps to build up the root system. |
ESSENTIAL Some phosphates should be applied every season, to encourage healthy roots |
The production of vigorous root growth is stimulated. The result is that root growth is stimulated in the spring, fresh reserves of food and water can be accessed quicker in the summer due to the new root growth. Side shooting is stimulated in early autumn. |
Bone meal. Super- phosphates. Phosphorus pentoxide. |
SPRING or AUTUMN |
POTASH Stimulates healthy growth, helps in preventing some diseases. |
DESIRABLE Sports turf apply routinely to feed and also as a moss inhibiter. |
Not as vital as nitrogen, although potash hardens the turf therefore making it more resistant to drought and diseases. Discolouration can also be minimised.
|
Potassium oxide. Sulphate of potash. |
SPRING or AUTUMN |
